Matthew A. Romano, M.D., is an Associate Professor of Cardiac Surgery and the Director of the multidisciplinary Mitral Valve Clinic. He joined the faculty in 2009 following the completion of thoracic surgery and surgical critical care residencies at the University of Michigan. He received additional advanced training in the surgical treatment of complex valvular heart disease and heart transplantation. Dr. Gorav Ailawadi joined the University of Michigan as the Chair of Cardiac Surgery in September of 2020. Previously, he served as the Chief of Cardiac Surgery, Co-Director of the Cardiac Valve Center, and Director of the Medical Device Innovation Center at the University of Virginia.Dr. Ailawadi was raised in Maryland and New Jersey. He attended an accelerated honors program in medical education at Northwestern University where he received the awards for best overall student and top surgical student. Additionally, he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. While completing a surgery residency at the University of Michigan, Dr. Ailawadi spent two research years investigating and understanding the development of aortic aneurysms. Bo Yang, MD, Ph.D., joined the Department of Cardiac Surgery at the University of Michigan in July 2011 after completing his Cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Stanford University. His clinical expertise spans the range of complex aortic surgical procedures to treat aortic pathology from aortic root to the femoral arteries (including open and TEVAR) and adult cardiac procedures, for patients with aortic aneurysm and dissections, such as bicuspid aortic vale, Marfan’s syndrome, Loeys-Dietz syndrome, familial thoracic aortic aneurysm. These include valve sparing aortic root replacement (David procedure), Bentall procedures, repair of aortic dissections, thoracic aortic aneurysms, thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms through open and endovascular procedures, aortic valve repair and other adult cardiac procedures including mitral valve repair and replacement, coronary artery revascularization and resection of cardiac tumors. He then attended the University of Colorado for medical school before completing his cardiothoracic surgical training at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. His current clinical research focuses on the impact of health policy, economics and surgical techniques on cardiac surgical access and quality. His basic science research focuses on the micro-RNA pathways of thoracic aortic aneurysm formation. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts, is an Associate Statistical Editor at the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and sits on multiple national societal committees focused on guidelines and quality.Dr. Hawkins has clinical interests in complex coronary revascularization and helps lead a multidisciplinary team to provide patients with personalized revascularization strategies. He performs both transcatheter and surgical valve procedures, including minimally invasive approaches. Additionally, he initiated the robotic cardiac surgery program at Michigan Medicine, combining his interests in minimally invasive approach and coronary revascularization. He has an interest in complex cardiac surgery and performs a high volume of Impella (LVAD) assisted coronary and valve operations. In his leisure time, he enjoys skiing, running, cycling, and spending time with his wife, Lauren, and their two sons. Dr. Hamilton is the Cheryl Huey, M.D. Early Career Professor of Cardiac Surgery. She was raised in Canada, initially pursued a career as a musician, and is a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from McGill University, and her Master of Music from Manhattan School of Music before turning her interests to a career in medicine. She continued her studies by earning her medical degree from Columbia University followed by a master’s degree from the University of California, San Francisco in epidemiology and biostatistics. She completed a surgical residency at UCSF and stayed for her fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery before joining us at the University of Michigan for advanced training in aortic surgery, where she stayed as faculty. She and her husband Tim are proud parents of two wonderful children. In her free time, she enjoys ultra-marathons and triathlons.
